The individual parts of the opencast mining process chain, from storage facilities to handling of the excavated materials, have been continuously improved over the course of the past few years by several measures. However, there is more potential in the optimization of the entire process.

The Department of Mathematics at TU Darmstadt introduced the international student course "Mathematics with Computer Science " that combines mathematics and computer science with multi cultural experience and communication skills. The Department "Dicrete Optimization " at Corporate Technology of the Siemens AG awards a scholarship for up to two excellent students of this course.
